Today we just drove around County Meath. Because we missed out on the opportunity to see the Book of Kells, we went to Kells where they have some replica pages of the book on display. It was also cool to see a small not too touristy town. Of the monastery where the book was written very little is left but you can see a cool old cemetery and some ancient celtic crosses.
However, if seeing the book is what you really want. You can see it online here.
We then stopped in Trim to see the Trim Castle. I have to say this was the best deal ever for a tour. To enter the castle is 2 Euro and the tour is 2 Euro but you get an awesome tour. The tour guide is so knowledgeable about the castle and about every other subject that might relate to the Norman occupation of Ireland. The tour lets you go through the keep and it shows that living in a castle was not the Disney fairy tale. It shows what a dark, dirty and unsanitary place castles were and why they were built the way they were.
This was probably my favorite day. We didn’t do much but we saw the beautiful countryside as we drove to Malahide.
