Thanksgiving is my favorite time of the year to travel. It is the beginning of low season so you get good deals on airfare and hotels and the kids only miss a couple days of school. You don’t get to eat your big turkey dinner or go Black Friday shopping but you might get to visit some of the early Christmas Markets or get some beach time.
Here is a recap of some of our favorite Thanksgivings Past:
Sahara Desert, Morocco
Last year we were riding camels on Thanksgiving. We slept in a Bedouin tent and sat around a campfire under a full moon. Does it get any cooler than that?
I have to admit that Budapest was one of my all time favorite places. It was SOOOO cold but we had such a great time. The people were so nice, the food was delicious and the thermal baths were the most fun we’ve had. We enjoyed eating Transylvanian Funnel Cakes at the Christmas Markets and some Langos. After Budapest we spent a few days in Prague.
3. Cappadocia, Turkey
I love Turkey. It is one of my favorite countries on earth. The food is my favorite. The people are amazingly nice and there is so much to see. We spent some great days in Istanbul with the kids before heading out to Cappadocia. We enjoyed the lunar landscape and the fairy houses. We went on hikes and discovered ancient stone churches and houses. What a great place to visit. The only thing we didn’t do was go on a hot-air balloon ride because the weather wasn’t good enough to fly. 😦

4. Venice, Italy
Venice is where my family is originally from so I feel at home on this watery maze. Spending Thanksgiving there has the advantage of having everything so empty but the colors are not nearly as vibrant as during the summer. The weather was fairly mild when we were there but there was historic flood the day after we left. But then we got snow in Milan.
This was a particularly fun trip as we started in Rome, stopped in Florence, Venice and Milan. While in Milan we had the opportunity to visit Lake Como which is an other-worldly beautiful place.
5. London, England
London is the place that started my desire to travel. My husband and I went and loved it so much that we decided to take our kids. We have been back many times but haven’t taken our kids out there again. We need to fix that.
London is a wonderful place to visit any time with so many museums, shows, monuments, shops and castles. Can’t get enough.
We have spent more Thanksgivings in Brazil than anywhere else. We have spent Thanksgiving in Rio, Guaruja, Minas Gerais and Salvador. We always stop in Sao Paulo when we go. It is spring time in Brazil so many times it is not super warm and can be rainy. But it is a great to see family and friends and enjoy Brazilian food. Plus the beaches are amazing and the people are always so welcoming. But then I am biased about Brazil.
I hope you have a happy thanksgiving where ever you are. I am grateful for the opportunity to travel and to enjoy time with my family and friends. I also am thankful to try new foods and meet new people. What a wonderful, beautiful world we live in.
